PM Lee on being open to online consultation portals

A COMMITTEE set up in 2010 to enrich the cultural landscape in Singapore will seek opinions from members of the arts community through conducting focus group sessions and launching an online consultation portal.

This, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, is in line with the Government’s efforts to ‘involve Singaporeans in developing ideas and policies that affect them’.

A sticking thorny issue is the claim from the LGBT community that the PAP seems trigger happy to censor LGBT themes, because “we are a still conservative society”. The LGBT group is right in saying that many countries have opened up to LGBT themes and ideals and Singapore is lagging. Perhaps the govt and the LGBT group can come to a compromise. The govt could relax some rules to allow LGBT themes, and at the same time the LGBT group should be more open to discussion about those who do not support LGBT ideas.

Heng Swee Kiat responds to Janelle’s open letter

Dear Janelle, Many thanks for taking your time to share this. I am deeply impressed and encouraged by your thoughtful remarks about what education should be – esp. your points on curiosity, creativity and character development! It cheers me, esp. coming from someone so young. Several students have also emailed me interesting ideas. I am gathering a group to discuss these ideas – I’d very much like to invite you to join us…hope you agree. Cheers!

Can parents join in? I wanna give my feedback too!

Our relations with our neighbours

45 Corruptors Flee Indonesia

Out of 45 corruptors who ran away overseas, 20 chose Singapore as the hideout.

Indonesia’s grievance against Singapore is that we are habouring crooks who stole money from Indonesia. Billions are kept in our banks as safe haven. Singapore also has no intention to extradite these crooks back to Indonesia. The friction between Indonesia and us has nothing to do with their population of 200+ million trying to usurp Singapore – something Chan Chun Seng “sexily” claimed as in the video below, at the 4:00 min mark.
http://image.razor.tv/site/flashplayer/razortv2.swf

Singapore not serious about an extradition treaty: Marzuki

Indonesian House of Representatives speaker Marzuki Alie accused Singapore of downplaying the need for “pure” talks on an extradition treaty between the two neighbors.

“Singapore has, at all times, never seriously responded to our need to make a pure extradition treaty. Our two countries are supposed to agree on an extradition treaty without relating it to other matters,” Marzuki said Friday in Jakarta, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Marzuki was apparently complaining about Singapore’s reported request to be allowed to conduct military training within Indonesian territory in exchange for the extradition treaty.

Marzuki said the two issues were “not correlated”.
The non-existence of an extradition treaty between Indonesia and Singapore has allowed the escape of many Indonesian fugitives who have fled to Singapore – an issue that has recently drawn the attention of the Indonesian in the aftermath of the escape of two prominent graft fugitives.

Very closely related to the immediate previous link, is the Extradition Treaty between Singapore and Indonesia which is yet to be ratified. Indonesia is accusing Singapore of delaying the ratification and that means the corrupted crooks and the billions they stole are still in Singapore. Singapore wants to link the extradition treaty with a request to allow our troops to train in Indonesia. Frankly, I think that is a lousy excuse from Singapore. The ill-gotten money is not ours, and we shouldn’t be complicit in hiding criminals in our land. It has nothing to do with our troops training in Indonesia. It only looks like our govt is giving an excuse to keep the ill gotten funds. Yes, there’s nothing “sexy” in keeping someone else’s stolen money.

GE: What are the hot-button issues?

The one issue that has lived up to its “hot-button” billing was the rising cost of living. An overwhelming 8 in 10 voters surveyed said they were worried about rising costs in their daily lives – be it when they were buying basic necessities at the supermarket, or a meal at the food court, or going to a polyclinic or planning to buy a new car or even going on a vacation.

80% is a high number. This is one issue that isn’t going to go away soon.

Racist troops in the crosshairs
The problem with these soldiers is that they feel they are on high moral ground and their enemies are the uncivilised ones. Hence, they feel justified in the killing of innocents. Wait a minute, isn’t this “holier than thou” mindset present in the so-called terrorists’ minds, too? Or at least that’s what the war-mongers try to portray.

The US ranks near the bottom of developed global economies in terms of financial stability and will stay there unless it addresses its burgeoning debt problems, a new study has found.

Workers’ Party questioned the ability of opposition parties to form a new government
I can’t understand why Sylvia feels the she and the rest of the opposition are not up to it. Parliament is just one part of the govt. All the other parts of the govt will still be there whether the PAP is around or not. That includes all the ministries, stat boards and judiciary. After all, when LKY and his first team of PAP leaders took over Singapore as an independent country, that’s exactly the status. So why is Sylvia harbouring this negative mindset? (More detailed discussion found in this link.)

All the govt needs to do is to ban all Singapore citizens from the IRs. After all, before these two IRs were operational, these compulsive gamblers never had the luxury of the casinos at their doorstep. Israel destroys West Bank road

Israeli bulldozers destroyed a Palestinian road in the West Bank Thursday and delivered orders to demolish two houses, witnesses and local sources said.

It is the second time Israel destroys the two-kilometer ” Freedom” street, which the Palestinian National Authority opened two months ago with a fund of 400,000 U.S. dollars, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the Israeli authorities handed down demolition orders to two houses in Salfeet city, saying they were built without license.

Imagine a foreign force invades YOUR LAND, occupies it and destroys your homes and infrastructure. Who is wiping who off the map?

Knesset Passes Bill Prohibiting Nakba Commemoration

The Israeli legislature has passed a bill that will require the state to fine local authorities or state funded bodies that commemorate the Palestinian Nakba Day.

The bill has been reworked since its proposal in May 2009; originally the bill authorized a three-year prison sentence for anyone seen commemorating the Nakba. Now it imposes a fine on any group or authority that hosts an event acknowledging the Palestinian Nakba.

Nakba is the Palestinians’ Holocaust. That’s to commemorate the event of Israel’s atrocities against the Palestinians. Israel now orders that the Nakba is illegal. “You will acknowledge that the only atrocity in the world is the Holocaust against the Jews.” – Zionist Extremist.

More lower-income families to benefit from CDAC

THE Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) has relaxed its income eligibility criteria to ensure that more lower-income families will benefit from its programmes and assistance schemes.

Why must we have CDAC, Mendaki, Sinda and Eurasian Fund? What’s wrong with one big happy Singapore fund for all Singaporeans regardless of race? You mean if you are Chinese you can’t help someone from another race or vice versa? Huh?

80,000 U.S. Cancers Caused by Bomb Test Fallout – 15,000 of Them Fatal

An estimated 80,000 people who were born or lived in the United States in the past 50 years have contracted or will contract cancer because of fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, according to an analysis of government studies. Well over 15,000 of them are estimated to be fatal.

The government exploded 215 A- and H-bombs above ground between 1951 and 1963, half at the Nevada Test Site and the others in the Pacific Islands.

This shows that America doesn’t really care for its people. It will do anything to test its toy weapons to control the world – even if it means harming its own citizens.

Deny the Holocaust and go to prison

Those who think that Europe is a “beacon of freedom” and “heaven of liberty” should give themselves an opportunity to reconsider what they had simplistically believed for so long.

Tens of people, including high-ranking academicians and authors from various nationalities who simply dared question the veracity of Holocaust accounts as described by the Jewish and Zionist historians, are spending their life in the underground jails and prisons of the European countries which we are conventionally told to know as beacons of freedom and heavens of democracy.

When Western nations say “freedom of speech”, they mean that you can say anything about anybody, including you can insult the Chinese with “ching chong, ling long, ting tong“, or putting up cartoons of Muhammad wearing a war-head as a turban. But breathe one word about the HollowCause, you’re dead meat.

Singapore lagging in appointing female directors
The implicit message is that we put up a quota for women just for the sake of putting up a quota to “show” that we end discrimination against women. What happened to meritocracy? If feminists want women to have equal treatment, they should be treated equally. Work your way up and not depend on quotas. On the other hand if feminists claim that the work environment is bias against women, let’s work to remove that bias. Setting up quotas is doing the exact opposite of what it is supposed to do – ie treating women as equals to men.

Househusband backlash as high-flying wives ditch men they wanted to stay at home

America’s callous attitude towards humanity is well known. Today, we know millions of civilians suffer under the hands of America. Possible sign of a growing class divide?

A parent’s level of education may help determine whether a child gets into a “brand-name” school or not.

New statistics concerning the parental background of secondary school students in Singapore may be pointing to growing class divisions within society.

This guy puts it really well. All you ever wanted to know about our “meritocratic” education, which really isn’t very meritocratic. A really good read. Also take note of the first comment after the main article. Written by an (ex?) teacher. Gives you an idea what it really is like in schools.

Do not take sick leave or else…

Madam Halimah Yacob, deputy secretary-general of the National Trade Union Congress, believes that a sick worker should not be forced to work.

“If, despite being sick and having a valid MC, a worker still decides to go to work, who is going to be responsible if something happens to him?” she told ST.

While the move by MBS may seem harsh, industry and human resource experts say they understand why the casino made such a drastic move to ensure dealers show up.

Mr Tony Compton, who has been in the gambling industry for over 20 years, said this is the first time he has heard of such an action.

“This is MBS’ first CNY, and they will be very very busy. It’s up to the company to do what they have to, to ensure that it is well-staffed during that period,” said the Boston Business School lecturer in casino management.

Ms Jacqueline Thoo, a lecturer in human resource management at Singapore Polytechnic, felt the move was too harsh. However, she admitted that “medical leave taken during that time would affect operations very significantly”.

1. Mdm Halimah is a unionist. Doesn’t she know that under the Employment Act, a worker is entitled to that MC? Yes, that’s an entitlement, NOT a privilege. If you are sick, you are sick.

2. If the company wants to contest that MC, it is contesting the doctor’s decision. A professional judgement has thus been challenged. But then, who is the employer to contest a judgement of the professional? Unless of course the company hires its own in-house doctor to contest that MC. MC should never be an employer-employee dispute.

US defends Israeli flotilla attack
US, the slave dog of Israel, defends its Master.

Israel aimed to ‘cleanse’ Gaza neighbourhoods in 2008 invasion

Israel’s controversial invasion of Gaza deliberately aimed to “cleanse” Palestinian neighbourhoods, former soldiers have alleged, in claims that will reignite the debate over the legality of the three week military campaign.

Hitler had such a plan too.

Medvedev recognizes E. Jerusalem as capital of future Palestinian state

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has made his first visit to Palestine without stepping foot on Israeli-occupied soil.

World leaders usually visit Israel when visiting Palestine to show impartiality.

Observers say the visit was also distinguished by the president’s backing of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Medvedev criticized US envoy to the Mideast peace process George Mitchell, a Russian news source says, quoting Medvedev: “Negotiations are facing a recession. There is no movement at the present time; which is sad because this accompanies a full number of negative factors, including the Gaza siege.”

The Russian Vedomosti newspaper quoted one expert as saying: “Russia, which shares good relations with Hamas, Fatah, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Israel, is able to sponsor fair, multilateral negotiations. But negotiations’ success depends on Israel, as Israel seems currently uninterested in the peace process.”

Medvedev held a trilateral summit with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Hamas politburo chief Khalid Mishaal last May then described by observers as a historic meeting that secured Hamas’s place in the international political scene.

This news was published a few days ago. I held it back from my summary because I did not want to detract articles pertaining to Old Man Lee then. However, I have decided to link this article today because of its significant impact on the Mid East as follows:

1. If Russia recognises East Jerusalem as Palestine’s capital, it would be a big slap in the face for Israel. This is the city that is the centre of dispute between Israel and Palestine. And Russia is explicitly taking the Palestinian side.

2. Even US and Europe don’t dare to recognise East Jerusalem (let alone West Jerusalem) as Israel’s capital, although Israel has moved many of its ministries to West Jerusalem, implicitly claiming a stake on West Jerusalem, with the hope of staking a claim on the East “when the time is ripe”.

3. Jerusalem is set aside as an International City under the UN Resolution in 1947. If Russia recognises East Jerusalem as capital of Palestine, it would also be a slap on UN’s face. Not that UN’s face has not been slapped because Israel has been violating UN Resolutions for half a century.

4. Russia, another superpower, is finally getting involved in the Mid East conflict, when for so long, US has been the sole superpower. This would cause a shift in the balance of power in the Mid East.

5. Israel’s “taken for granted right” to Palestinian lands would no longer be taken for granted.

PS – Note that it didn’t take long before Russia got bombed by some “extremists”, after the above statement was made by the Russian leader. Coincidence?

Why I decided to join TOC
Siew Kum Hong joins TOC. If you recall, he was the guy who claimed to be “AWARE’s old guard’s” advisor at Aware’s EGM in May 2009. SKH is a known pro-gay guy. But as LKY said, it doesn’t matter if one is gay (or pro-gay for that matter). We judge a person by his works. Let’s see if SKH can be impartial when it comes to gay matters, because he definitely wasn’t in his last assignment. And neither was TOC impartial too!

MM Lee on why he demolished rivals…
Justifying the need to kill off rivals is like justifying why you need to do evil deeds. You can call it politics if you want to. I call it hypocrisy.

Parents’ background the edge for students
It sure took a long time for Ivory Tower Resident, Old Man Lee, to admit what peasants knew all along – that Sg has an education system that creates an elitist society.

Marrying a citizen doesn’t guarantee PR status
Singapore has a very opaque immigration admission criteria for a developed nation. You do not know what qualifies (or disqualifies) you from being a PR. All you know that you stand a better chance if you are: a male, highly educated, have lots of money, and of course, Chinese.

Monkey nuisance: Complaints rose 30% last year
We’ve had one monkey on this site who trolls, spams and even put up hate and porn posts. Did this spamming monkey come from the same troop?

Rest of the World

Iran: Warships to sail to Mediterranean
Do unto others what others do unto you. If you recall, some months back, Israel placed some sea monsters (ie Naval warships) near the Gulf Region, way out of Israel’s territory, presumably to send Iran a message. Now Iran does to Israel what Israel does to Iran. Placing warships way out of its territory, presumably to send Israel the same message it received months earlier.

Diplomat: US to End Lebanon Aid if Hezbollah Forms Govt
1. That’s to show the skeptical readers that US is a hypocrite when it says that the people should decide for themselves. Democracy, according to US, is having a govt who US approves. If the people themselves decide, that is anarchy. Ha ha.

2. It is not true that Hezbollah has never been the govt, and the US now tries to stop it from being one. Hezbollah has been part of the govt, albeit a minority voice. But today, that is about to change and it is set to be a majority voice. That is what US is afraid about.

3. Stopping aid to Lebanon is no real loss to Lebanese. If US stops the aid, someone else will fill the void. Either Iran or Russia, or both.

US is losing it. It doesn’t even know how to play its cards right.

Netanyahu: Raid on Gaza flotilla was necessary to protect Israel
That’s like Hitler saying his attack on Poland was necessary to protect the Nazi regime.

Abbas: We will not make unilateral declaration of Palestinian statehood
Of course he won’t. Abbas is America’s paid stooge to help Israel out. Abbas’ role is to undermine Hamas. This is the game US and Israel play. When Arafat was the Palestinians’ leader, Israel funded Hamas to undermine Arafat. Now that Hamas has broken off links with Israel and forms the elected govt of Gaza, Abbas is paid to undermine Hamas. Should Abbas be in control in future, you will find another proxy from America and/or Israel to undermine him!

Torture and ‘unjustified homicide’ in US run prisons in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay?
The Nazis had similar torture camps too.

Tony Blair ‘regrets’ Iraq deaths but says Britain must stop apologising for invasion
Really? Why then are the Germans (and even Europe) made to feel guilty for Hitler’s crimes towards Jews even though it has been more than half a century then?

>MM Lee on PAP losing power: That day will come
For a founder to say that about the very party he formed, just when he knows when his time is about to be up, gives me the impression that he hopes PAP will fall and people will attribute PAP’s (and Singapore’s) success to just one man – himself. I know of no bigger narcissist.

Singapore’s Lee wants home demolished
The Narcissist is not able to stop talking about himself. Why should he decide if his house be demolished after he dies? He thinks he’s bigger than the government. Shouldn’t it be the govt, who always maintains it has a right to decide if your freehold property is to be acquired, has the last say? If he truly wants his house demolished, I suggest he does it NOW, at his own cost – and release that space for the community to put it for more productive use. After all, he has many other properties such that he doesn’t need this one.

ST poll on MM Lee’s comment: Will you die for each other?
I have a better question for Old Man Lee – will you get your grandchildren to die for Singapore? If yes, put them on the frontline in Afghanistan and Iraq, instead of putting up token SAF boys in support services there to “defend our freedom from terrorists”. If no, you are not willing to do that, note that you have no right to ask us if we are willing to die.

MM Lee: A mythological figure?
Yes. Centaur Mentor Minister. Half animal. You get the picture.

Fees at Tampines lifestyle hub to be affordable
Fees? Affordable? Why must there be fees in the first place to enjoy food from restaurants, shows from cinemas or even public services from community centres? Trying to create an elitist society?

Singapore Indians were better off under Colonial British than under Chinese supremacists dominated PAP
I fully agree. In fact, all non-Chinese races were better off too.
